WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

Shakespeare & Sons opened another store with even more books and bagels. The concept combines a bookstore with a café. The new store looks like a library straight from the 60’s with its minimalistic wooden interior. With it’s more neat and organized atmosphere, it makes the perfect place to sit down and put pen to paper.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

Field & Stream specializes in hunting, fishing, camping, paddling and general outdoors.

The environment was carefully crafted to provide a genuine, immersive experience without seeming tricked out. The open space, filled with raw materials – stone and wood surfaces – is easy to navigate. Two walls run the length of the store, dividing it into identifiable merchandise areas. Roughly, the left side is devoted to hunting, the right side to fly fishing, paddle sports and camping. There is an archery range near the entrance, a smaller range as well, and for hunters in the market for a tree stand, there is a demo center where hunters can try them out. Among the zillions of items are firearms, bows, boots for all purposes, camouflage apparel, workwear, casual wear, kayaks, canoes, sleeping bags, tents and a fishing gear area.

A highlight of the visual approach is an extensive collection of taxidermy, from mounts on the wall to forest vignettes throughout the floor. The collection, assembled by Wildlife Recapture. Customers entering and walking about the store encounter displays of bears, wolves and other outdoors creatures, intimidating in their realism yet beautiful in a surreal way. One installation includes huge displays of wolves and deer in a real-life chase scene through a wooded forest with painstaking detail given to capture the reality of nature.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

The name comes from a very American way of naming cities, using a prefix and the French word "city" as a suffix. And offroad motorcycling being the main soul of Mudville Motorcycles. The Mudville shop project presented for us a double challenge.

Firstly, on the functional side, because it sells so different kinds of products that it is really hard to exhibit them with coherence. Secondly, we had to change the undeserved bad concept that the country motorcycle has nowadays and proof that their users are real nature passionate.

In the end, Mudville represents the best of the country motorcycle and a bet for the functional side. The whole shop is an oak wood showcase conveying warmth, community and respect for the environment. It is with no doubt a new way to understand the country motorcycle, much more connected to nature and willing to preserve the environment and not to deteriorate it.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

The store name refers to when the brand was established in the UK and adds a modern edge to the heritage brand. The B1866 shop is not only a showcase of their product range, but a celebration of the Brooks brand’s 150 year history.

Brooks is increasingly trying to leverage its cult reputation to become a fully-fledged lifestyle brand and the store is seen as central to that push. The new store shows off the complete Brooks Saddles range, limited editions, repair kits, other cycling paraphernalia but also clothing and a wider range of bags.

The B1866 store features a lovely little basement room where clients can order custom made coloured saddles. It also hosts some of the world's leading frame makers who offer a full custom build service.

At the B1866 store, simplicity reigns. Painted brick walls enclose the space, making it cozy and homey, while brightly colored furnishings and accessories add in a welcomed pop of color. This modern interior works harmoniously with the products and vintage detail on display.

Brooks make more of their heritage by displaying photos of John Boultbee on the walls. The shop sign is made from copper – an allusion to the copper rivets used in Brooks saddles – and it’s a theme that continues inside. B1866 is a classy, traditional-looking joint with everything very neatly displayed and Brooks themselves are referring to it as the Brooks Cathedral.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

The retail design agency Design4Retail have redesigned the Saatchi Gallery Store on Kings Road in London. The Saatchi Gallery provides an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by unseen UK artists and international artists whose work has rarely been exhibited in the UK.

Design4Retail created a bespoke retail environment for the Gallery store which aims to showcase high quality products that inform, educate and entertain visitors. In doing so, Design4Retail created a stylish retail environment that complement and the display.

The entire retail space is open and bright, with the main retail display presenting range of products on modular white flexible shelving that seamlessly blends into the background. The whole retail system is entirely flexible with moveable category headers that direct consumers to their product of choice.

The premium retail design area is dedicated to exhibiting high value products from featured designers. The space was given its luxury image by incorporating suspended glass shelving complemented by a deep grey carpet. Again, the shelving system is fully changeable and modular, yet also allows for branded imagery to be located behind the products into illuminated panels in order to separate the products identity whilst highlighting the products with a beautiful glowing backlight.

The entire retail space creates a serene ambience which can easily be adapted and developed as new product ranges are introduced. This gives this retail design environment great longevity through the bespoke and functional elements that exude refinement and style.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

The Australian brand Deus ex Machina builds neatly customised motorcycles with the notion that doing something is more fun than just owning something. Deus ex Machina is a step bigger than a brand: it’s a culture. Deus didn’t set out only to sell custom parts and hand-built motorcycles, but to celebrate a culture of creativity.

Deus Ex Machina is a great example of where cult brands are headed in terms of store design moving to being a living expression of a lifestyle – somewhere a customer can live it, as well as experience product within a store. Deus Ex Machina does all of this and is pretty much everything the bike enthusiast could want in one block.

The slash store or the store hybrid concept has the power to make the heart beat faster. The store is set within a courtyard environment and showcases all of the motorbike, fixed gear bike and surf brands range of product and clothing.

There is also a café bar and restaurant complex done out in reclaimed vintage furniture with wood cut walls and wooden floors. The store also has access to Bullfrog, an adjacent modern but traditional-style barbers concept at the back. All are welcomed under the Deus roof, where there’s simply respect for the honesty and enjoyment of the machine, inclusiveness, authenticity and enthusiasm.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

The store named Brompton Junction is a Brompton-only concept store, the first of which opened in Kobe, Japan in March 2011.

Brompton is world-renowned for their folding bikes and the concept of their flagship store is to offer a consistent customer experience irrespective of the city in which you live. Each Junction is designed to incorporate the five elements integral to the Brompton brand: ingenuity, compactness, London/Britain, personality and freedom. This is achieved through the store’s design, by offering a personalised service, holding plenty of stock and through having high calibre workshop facilities and well trained staff.

The location of the flagship Brompton Junction in Covent Garden, not only reflects the capital’s unique relationship with the brand but is also the site of the workshop from where Britain’s first hobby-horse bicycle was made and sold. The Brompton Junction store needed to reflect the companies branding and make best use of the space available.

It trades from two levels and not only showcases the full range of Brompton bikes, bags and accessories, but also includes a workshop and café.

At street level, the store welcomes visitors with illuminated pigeonhole shelving offering space for 27 Bromptons in sweet shop style bright colours, the aim being to show the diversity of options that are available. An interactive table "Bike builder" allows customers to click through the design process and B-spoke a new bike to their needs before ordering. Hidden snuggly under a bench, upholstered in District-line-material, are half a dozen demonstrator models ready for those interested in taking one out for a spin. This floor also covers a range of accessories and graphics about building a Brompton.

Downstairs, there is a workshop, but instead of being hidden away, this one is made a highlight of the store and shoppers can walk into it. A café opposite the workshop uses Brompton bike saddles on poles act as the seats, organised around a bar-like fixture.

In total, this is about creating a real experience, to enthuse and inspire Brompton fans both near and far.

WHY IS THIS SHOP INTERESTING TO VIEW?

Little Bookworm is a children’s store that sells books, toys, and related products.

The aim was to create an enchanting experience, a magical wonderland where children can play, explore, and establish a lifelong love of reading.

A little bookworm living in the forest inspired the store’s concept and design. Upon entering the bookstore, children and their parents immediately feel as if they’ve stepped into the pages of a fairy-tale story. Adults can also relax, interact, and learn from each other in this casual setting.

The entrance to the store is lined with structures like the trees found in a magical forest. Rainbow LED lights line the sides of each structure to draw attention to the store entrance and emphasize the oversize tree shapes. Inside the story was brought to life (inspired by a pop-up book) through a series of vignettes showing Little Bookworm’s home. His play area became the arts and crafts area, his sleeping area is the storytime space, his eating area is the cafe.

The store is recognizable for its vibrant and bright color palette, chosen both for its simplicity and its familiarity to children. Colors of the rainbow play out in a series of LED lights across the storefront and flow into the interior. The vivid color notes expand across free-form tree sculptures, overhead lighting, curvilinear bookshelves, tables and chairs, and other surfaces within the space.

Much more than a retail store, the space also can play host to children’s birthday parties, arts-and-crafts classes, movie showings and storytelling sessions. The store offers annual memberships for customers to access even more features.

The design encourages the imagination and creativity of both children and parents by providing “areas of discovery,” including seating nooks, a magical storytime area that resembles the inside of a tree trunk, and a mezzanine with a giant paper tree, where children can sit and read. There also are memory foam “worm stools” in rainbow colors that can come apart and fit back together for seating, and tree-shaped magnetic chalkboards, where children can draw and play with magnetic shapes to create their own designs. The café features simple tables with colorful chairs. This was designed with parents in mind, with shelving to display parenting books, and healthy snacks for sale, including fruit, juice and smoothies.
