Hermès’ Chinese sister brand Shang Xia opened its first global outpost in Paris. The boutique’s interiors combines Chinese cultural elements with influences from Impressionist art and rhythms inspired by Parisian history to create a cloud-like space.
Six thousand thin, rectangular ceramic panels make up the walls and delineate its spaces, and recalls the hutong-inspired brick patchwork of the brand’s Beijing boutique, at the same time channeling the ethereal ambiance of the Shanghai flagship with its walls made of white fabric scrims. Apart from the brand’s well-loved range of clothing, jewelry, furniture and household objects handmade using fine traditional crafts methods, Shang Xia will be celebrating this launch with a special edition cashmere and silk scarf that captures and brings together the spirit of both cultures.
Shanghainese folk artist Zhang Meiling has drawn from the style of traditional Jin Shan peasant paintings to conjure up an idyllic landscape of Chinese characters dressed in traditional attire milling about Parisian landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre Museum.
